The novel starts in high gear when a patrol of six SAS men are looking for Serb anti-aircraft guns. Among their ranks is James Palatine, a young captain in the Intelligence Corps. Officers are resented by the rougher soldiers, so Palatine is bullied by them.
When on patrol a fearful wailing is heard, and the source is a woman who has been eviscerated, and two men are seen fleeing. So the SAS Unit extract revenge on the two men who brutalised the woman. The woman is taken to what the SAS consider a safe refuge.
Several plot devices appear in this thriller: the SAS, refugees, Kosovon corrupt officials; peace conference in Paris; a translator, Anna whose daughter has been abducted, and several others, call girls, human trafficking, you name it, this has it all.
This is a whale of a book, both in terms of size [over 400 pages] and in terms of content. Set in a Kosovo, seeking independence it comes with a warning: the narrative is not for the squeamish as it is striated throughout with violence, torture, brutality and rage.
