When a rapist is found mutilated in a brutal attack, Detective Kim Stone and her team are called in to bring a swift resolution. But Kim little imagines what she’s really dealing with. Behind the man’s killer sits a truly ingenious sociopath, a lethal individual undertaking their own twisted experiment into the darkest limits of manipulating the most vulnerable.

This is the second book in the DI Kim Stone series, and clearly a re-release since books 3 & 4 are already available. However, it is not absolutely necessary to read them in order, since each book does stand alone as a separate story.

In places, this is a difficult book to read. Parts of it are told from the villain’s point of view, and the villain is a truly hateful person. Kim Stone is also quite a difficult person to like at times, but her back story tells a sad tale of child abuse and growing up in a series of foster homes. Knowing all this does give the reader a better understanding of, and empathy for, the character.

‘Evil Games’ is an apt title for this book, as throughout Kim and the sociopath she is pursuing attempt to out-manoeuvre each other in psychological mind games. The result is an utterly compelling novel that will have you gripped to the end.
